Say NO! to Horizon dairy products
Every time I indulge in the luxury that is shopping for dinner at Union Market, I am shocked to see that the Slope’s model for organic, locavore living sells butter made by Horizon. I thought the company had received sufficient publicity for its horrendous treatment of cows to lose its slot in such hallowed grocers’ bins.
If you prefer organic dairy products — or even if you buy them by default because they’re more widely available in your yup-tastic hood — check out The Cornucopia Institute’s scorecard of American organic dairy producers. The Institute has surveyed producers nationwide and ranked them according to the way they treat their livestock. If you live in Brooklyn, you’re safe with Organic Valley and Amish Country Farms, both of which receive four-cow (excellent) ratings.
You are not safe buying from Horizon.
