Lets take a minute to look at what people are doing during the economic downfall we are currently in the midst of.

Right now many people can barely afford gas for their cars.  Many people are struggling to get by, and many people dream of having enough money to even see 200 one dollar bills.  But someone in New York City has enough disposable income to spend 43.8 Million Dollars for this Andy Warhol painting entitled  ”200 One Dollar Bills”.

Now I find this completely ironic because Andy Warhol was known for his paintings illustrating the mass production and mass consumerism of society.  And for a time that common society does not have the funds to enjoy the common consumer products the people are used to, someone still has the money to spend 43.8 million on a painting that strongly promotes the mass spending and mass consuming. If this is anything, its a big F-You to the common consumer.

A little extra info:

Warhol broke into the Neo-dada (also known as junk art) movement in the 70’s and produced many hand painted pieces showing many standard consumer items.  He was most popular for his Green Coca Cola bottles, 100 Coca Cola Bottles, and his Campbell’s Soup cans.  He has also produced many paintings using the likeness of Marilyn Monroe, after her passing, painting her head several times over in one painting with different shades and colors.

As crazy as it is for me to understand why someone would pay 43.8 Million Dollars for Warhol’s 200 One Dollar Bills, it is still not the most paid for a Warhol painting.  In 1963 someone paid 100 Million Dollars for his painting called “Eight Elvises”
